Era fiul unui jurnalist englez care lucra \u00een calitate de corespondent al unui ziar englez \u00een Fran\u0163a.<br \/>\nDup\u00e3 ce a studiat artele la faimoasa \u00c9cole des Beaux Arts, s-a sim\u0163it atras de numeroasele inven\u0163ii mecanice ce ap\u00e3reau la sf\u00e2r\u015fitul secolului al XIX-lea, cum erau bicicleta \u015fi automobilul. Astfel, devine campion de ciclism, dar particip\u00e3 \u015fi la competi\u0163ii automobilistice pentru Renault. Dup\u00e3 o lung\u00e3 perioad\u00e3 de refacere, ca urmare a unui accident auto, renun\u0163\u00e3 la competi\u0163iile de pe \u015fosea, aleg\u00e2nd noua realizare a tehnicii \u015fi anume, avionul. Cump\u00e3r\u00e3 un avion biplan, cu elice propulsoare, realizat de Gabriel Voisin pe care-l va denumi Voisin-Farman I, cu care efectueaz\u00e3 un prim zbor \u00een 1907. Chiar dac\u00e3 va sta \u00een aer mai mult dec\u00e2t era prev\u00e3zut de c\u00e3tre constructorul avionului, el va aduce modific\u00e3ri acestuia (Voisin-Farman I bis) pentru ca, \u00een ianuarie 1908, s\u00e3 realizeze un zbor de peste un kilometru, performan\u0163\u00e3 nerealizat\u00e3 p\u00e2n\u00e3 atunci. \u00cen acela\u015fi an, Farman este \u015fi autorul primului zbor cu pasager din Europa.<br \/>\n\u00cen 1909 \u00eenfiin\u0163eaz\u00e3, l\u00e2ng\u00e3 Versailles, propria fabric\u00e3 de avioane, unde primul avion construit va purta numele de Type III.<br \/>\n\u00cen 1914 \u00eencepe producerea faimoaselor Farman F-40 \u201eHorace\u201c, un biplan cu elice propulsoare care s-a aflat \u00een dotarea mai multor armate, printre care \u015fi cea a Rom\u00e2niei.
