The Crucifixion and the Resurrection represent the eternal connection between death and life.
The egg, itself a life bearer, becomes a symbol of regeneration, purification, but also of eternity.
In our country, on Easter, eggs are not painted only in red, but also in other colours, making very inspired and beautiful drawings, with geometrical motifs, plants, animals and religious motifs. Bucovina is well known for its tradition of ornamenting eggs with designs. The harmony of colours, the fineness of models inherited from generation to generation and the craftsmanship of the execution have turned this skill into an art. The eggs are ornamented in three-four colours also taking into account the meaning of each colour: red (sun, fire, love), black (eternity, steadiness), yellow (light, rich crops, youth), green (the force of nature, fertility, hope), blue (health, sky blue).
In Bucovina decorative Easter eggs are also ornamented with glass pearls, made of wood in Neamţ or clay in Corund, Harghita County.
In the old days, Easter eggs were painted in vegetal colours, but now the chemical ones are used more. Vegetal colours were prepared by old recipes, inherited from generation to generation, with a wide variety of procedures and techniques. The plants used for this purpose, depending on the moment they were harvested, on the duration of their drying and the way they were combined, offered an extremely wide variety of shades.
On the postage stamps of the issue, with the face value of RON 0.50 each, are illustrated ornamented eggs, made in the 20th century, in Oboga (Olt County) and Bucovina, as well as detail from an icon painted on glass (Gherla, 19th century) that form part of the centennial collection of the Romanian Peasant Museum.
The Holy Easter may bring you only peaceful thoughts, light in your soul and hope for a better future.
Christ is risen!
