The philatelic issue Anniversaries. George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures, consisting of a postage stamp, a perforated souvenir sheet and a First Day Cover, will be introduced into circulation on Friday, April 4th, 2025.
In 1945, King Michael I of Romania laid the foundations of continuing higher medical education in Targu Mures. Three years after its establishment, medical and pharmaceutical education was organised within the Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute (IMF) of Targu Mures, comprising the following faculties: General Medicine, Hygiene, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.
After evaluating the activity of the teaching staff and the concrete results of their work, it was decided that the Targu Mures IMF would be granted the right to organise doctoral studies, in accordance with the provisions of Order 800/1965 of the Ministry of Education.
In the period after 1990, which was marked by the fall of the communist regime, the IMF becomes the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) Targu Mures, the change of name being accompanied by the updating and modernization of the educational offer.
The Faculty of Medicine of the Targu Mures UMF is the main component of the current George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures, established in 2018 by the merger of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy with ‘Petru Maior’ University. The Faculty of Medicine stands out both in terms of the number of students and academic staff, as well as for its research activity. The concern for academic performance is reflected in the permanent development of its material base, becoming the symbol of academic life in Mures county. The Faculty of Medicine in Targu Mures is the only one in Romania with Hungarian-language teaching series.
The association of George Emil Palade’s name with the prestigious University in Targu Mures entails the duty to honour the renowned researcher, Nobel Prize laureate, by maintaining a high standard in education and research, reflected in all programmes and projects promoted by the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures. Under the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum’ (Out of many, one), medical education in Targu Mures stands as a symbol of unity in diversity, progress through knowledge, and excellence embraced with responsibility.
The postage stamp of the philatelic issue (with the face value of Lei 14) features the portrait of the great scientist George Emil Palade, Nobel Prize laureate, in a graphic composition alongside an architectural detail of the University’s façade, marking the 80th anniversary of its establishment.
The souvenir sheet features a panoramic image of the university campus, integrated into the design of the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 30.
The First Day Cover features a photomontage that reunites an image of the University building from the early 20th century with a picture of the current façade architecture.
Romfilatelia thanks the representatives of the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures, for the documentary support provided in the development of this postage stamps issue.
